Putting the "me" in media


This photo will say a lot of different things to different people. (To see the supersized original version, click on the photo above).

One thing it clearly illustrates is the urge and capability of people to be their own media: look at all the cameras, cellphones, even computers being aimed at Barack Obama by the jubilant people in this Berlin crowd. It's astonishing. It means something.

    The photo is astonishing and it does mean something. Look closely at the enormous number of American flags. Flag-waving is one of the oldest forms of communication and in a parade or rally they are social media. What's being communicated with all the American flags in Germany?

    And notice the guy holding up his laptop, I presume, to capture video, maybe even streaming?

    Wow indeed. Searched for "berlin" and "obama" for photos on Flickr taken after July 24. More than 1,300.
