About Kindle

Amazon's Kindle e-reader is getting considerable attention, and will be of interest to us for obvious reasons. By all accounts ( I haven't seen one), it's a solid product: well designed, easy to read, functional. Unlike previous electronic book devices, this one comes with a free online updating for subscriptions and book purchases, making it a prospective platform for newspapers (amongst many other things).

But the blogospheric debate has been fierce. Unsurprisingly, it tends toward love it/hate it extremes.

Amazon's sell is pretty good. Guy Kawaksaki loves it -- more than his iPhone.

Jeff Jarvis isn't buying, and John Gruber is even more dismissive.

The most recent Newsweek featured Jeff Bezos and the Kindle on the cover.

  2. I love my iPod Touch, which is amazing little device for the same price as the Kindle. It's the first iPod to do video right, which is good for newspapers, and the wifi is pretty darned good (if a bit slow).

I would be interested in seeing what the Kindle can do.

The progressive thing for McClatchy to do is purchase one of these for each newspaper and for each of the VPs.

We do not need to invent technology to be ahead of the game, but we do need to be ready to embrace it.

Good post and good comments, and good luck, McClatchy. May those of you fighting for online overcome the forces of internal resistance that are killing your company. More here: http://axcessnews.com/index.php/articles/show/id/13122

I see the stock price is down another dollar today, and there aren't amany dollars left.

  4. The concept of having my entire library sitting inside this thing is a huge draw but... but... you have to pay for blogs.

Despite whatever other pros it may have I can't get past that.
